I am currently reading Before She Was Helen, by Caroline B. Cooney. It is an interesting story! It sounds like a cozy mystery set in a retirement community, with the protagonist stumbling over the body of her neighbor by chance. But this is not your standard cozy mystery. I would not even class it as a cozy, even though the storyline sounds like one. It borders on psychological suspense with the main character’s back history taking center stage and the murder takes a backseat.
The fascinating protagonist, Helen, is unlike any female sleuth readers have seen before. Not even your usual senior sleuth. She has a plethora of secrets that are slowly revealed as the story progresses. Caroline B. Cooney does an excellent job at uncovering her secrets like peeling layers away from an onion.
Reluctantly, Clemmie inserted the key into Dom Spesante’s front door. Don’t be dead, she warned Dom silently.
