For those who like to use their calendar for time blocking/boxing or other purposes as well as just outside appointments: I use multiple calendars. One is just my outside commitments. The things you say you put on your calendar. I can layer that with my husband and son's calendars to see where we *have* to be during the day/week/month and if there are any conflicts.

I have a separate calendar for my timeblocking, which shows the times that I have designated for particular kinds of work, travel time cushions around appointments, and other things that I plan to accomplish but are not "hard" outside commitments. I layer it with my outside commitments and my family's calendars to see the whole picture. When I do my week plan, I can drag these blocks around the calendar and make necessary adjustments to make them work. Sort of like playing Tetris.

I have another calendar to keep track of book promotions I am in (usually multi-day), marketing I have committed to, stuff I have scheduled for my weekly newsletter, etc. I only ever look at this calendar by itself. I can see all promotions I am running on any one day at a glance instead of having to go back to the initial information to see what days each promotion covers.

And of course I also have my boss's calendars and any other calendars I have subscribed to. I use Fantastical (Mac/iOS only) to put my calendars into collections so that I can see all of the related ones at the same time (all of my boss's calendars, for example, and none of mine) without having to individually select which calendars I want to layer together. And the saved collections have hotkeys so I can get to the one that I want with one keystroke.
