Word is a business tool, not a creative writing tool. I have used it for decades in legal, with cross references, footnotes, indexes, mail merge, track changes or compare versions, auto numbered multi-level headings, tables, calculations, etc.

But if all you’re doing is reflowable text with a heading or two and some bullet points, you don’t need all that.

I have also moved away from Word and Scrivener to markdown for my creative writing, notes, etc. I have stayed away from apps that are solely web apps or that require you to put everything into one repository. I want all of my files for a book to be in one folder, from research and brainstorming through to drafting, final product, promo graphics, and so forth. So I will only use programs that will let me save where I want to in my file system.
